AUSTIN, TX (10/02/2025) – SafeHorns is gravely concerned and disappointed by Travis County Judge Tamara Needles’ decision on October 1, 2025, to release Kendrex White from a state mental health hospital into a group home. White was found not guilty by reason of insanity for the 2017 campus stabbing that killed Harrison Brown and injured three others.
“The court’s decision is deeply troubling and a painful setback for the victims’ families and the entire UT community,” said Joell McNew, President of SafeHorns. “We were assured that Kendrex White would remain in a secure facility for a very, very long time. For his release to be considered and approved only eight years later raises serious concerns for campus safety.”
SafeHorns has consistently raised awareness about the risks of White’s potential release since a hearing was first scheduled in July 2025. The organization attended the court hearing and gathered community voices through an open letter to share concerns about his transfer to outpatient care. The Travis County District Attorney’s office also opposed the release, citing the wishes of the victims’ families and community safety. The ruling disregards these significant concerns.
This decision forces the community to grapple with the reality that White, a man diagnosed with a mental illness that is not cured, will now live under less secure supervision in a group home, just a short time after prosecutors expressed concern that 90 days ago his medication levels were unstable. While he will be monitored, this does not provide the same level of security as an inpatient facility. As Harrison Brown’s mother, Lori Brown, stated, this creates the painful thought that she could “come face to face on the street with her son’s killer.”
SafeHorns stands firmly with the Brown family and all victims and survivors of the 2017 attack. The organization will continue to monitor this situation and work tirelessly to ensure that accountability and public safety remain the highest priorities.
