One preventable student death is too many
In April 2016, an 18-year old, first-year theater and dance major at The University of Texas at Austin was sexually assaulted and strangled. University president Gregory Fenves called the homicide an “unthinkable brutality.”
In the days following the murder, a group of concerned parents of University of Texas at Austin students formed a private Facebook group to discuss the safety of their Longhorn sons and daughters. As the group's numbers swelled to nearly a thousand members, local Austin business leaders, members of the media, and employees of the university (some with and some without children enrolled at the university), requested that they be allowed to join the group to be able to contribute their ideas and resources.
SafeHorns is a private coalition – the result of this diverse group of concerned parents, stakeholders, and citizens – committed to taking constructive action to improve safety and security conditions for UT students, faculty, staff, and visitors.
